Yes, I've pressed the red button. Anyway, what are we here to talk about?
Speaker 2:We're going to do a wrap-up to tell everybody where we've just been. We have just had a fun, hot week in Walt Disney World.
Speaker 1:That's the one in Orlando.
Speaker 2:That's the one in Orlando. Yes, not in France. We haven't gone to France. We haven't gone to France for a little while. No, we've just been back. We've just literally got back from Iraq. We were out there for a week. We flew out on Virgin Islands, we kind of went for the sexy swish plane, wasn't it?
Speaker 1:it wasn't bad. Actually, the one going out was like two weeks old, which was a bit worrying because I'm like something's going to fall off it. But no, it was pretty good. I quite liked it.
Speaker 2:It definitely smelled new. Yeah, we did the. He threw into the, although it was a special flight, which was just so very. That was a finchel.
Speaker 1:It was long.
Speaker 2:It was long, long enough to watch two films. We turned up from great jury London and we landed in rather toasty America.
Speaker 1:Rather toasty. It was like 32 degrees when we landed, and it just got hotter. It was like 32 degrees when we landed, and it just got hotter.
Speaker 2:Yeah, so clear to security and we went and picked up our transfer and we're using a company called Gear Fusion that are highly reliable, Very nice company and also often nice in the fact that they meet you at the airport and you go direct to your resort. You don't have the two hours of sitting on the bus going round and then it blows out.
Speaker 1:Yeah, it was quite nice.
Speaker 2:Nice.
Speaker 1:Although they're not cheap.
Speaker 2:No, it's not cheap, but I think you pay for the service.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and I don't like buses that much. They're okay, but I'd rather not have a bus. But no, gear Fusion do like them. They're a pretty good service and we actually used them later in the trip as well, which I think we'll mention.
Speaker 2:We will mention. And then we've had a little throw. We saw now for this trip we were doing a split stay and we had two nights in our home dvc.
Speaker 1:Result the riviera and it actually felt we were going home. Yeah, I do like the riviera.
Speaker 2:I like the riviera, dear I get the hint no more split stays. I've got it and it's been doing a cruise in the middle, which we can do. Split states on yeah, are we going to explain to them what we mean by split state what we mean by split state is we actually spent a couple of nights in one resort so yeah, we then packed everything up and then we moved to another resort for this trip we moved to animal fiends and lodge kidani village which sounds really posh and it's not too bad.
Speaker 1:But yeah, the bit in the middle, the packing up. Effectively you lose a day because it means everything has to be packed up before you check out. Then you've got to go to bail services or get bail services to pick up, get your luggage over to the other resort. You don't have access to it until it's available in the other resort in your room. So yeah, split stays just a move resort. Nah, don't like it.
Speaker 2:It was a nice changing resort, but it was a bit of a faff.
Speaker 1:And what did we think of Kidani? I quite liked Kidani.
Speaker 2:I actually quite liked it, though it was quite a resort than Elm Kingdom's other hotel which is Jumbo House, and we were fortunate in that we had booked a sub-manual view. So I came to himself a hotel which is Jumbo House, and we were fortunate in that we had booked a suburb of you. So I got to wake up and buy the draft.
Speaker 1:Yeah, after the third day it's like, oh, giraffes again. I mean, this is first world hardship, isn't it? You wake up in the morning, it's the wildebeest are after you again, or the giraffe giraffe is, but no, it wasn't too bad, so we did do the pool one day, though both resorts we did the pool in riviera which was really nice and it was actually quite nice.
Speaker 2:At the pool he had a lovely lady going around with her cart with her ice water, giving a little bit more to it as well. I think that's probably because of how hot it was.
Speaker 1:Riviera have a family pool and an adult's choir pool, whereas kidani only had the one pool, so it was a little bit loud in the pool, but we used to find a quiet, shady corner sort of A little bit loud, was that before the point when they started doing the water polo disco things?
Speaker 1:Oh yeah, the kid disco, the kid disco which was hilarious because the CMs started trying to get all the kids to start to dance in the pool and the kids weren't interested. So after about 10 minutes the CMs were just like, oh OK, we'll go back outside. But they were like, yeah, a bit disheartening for the poor old CMs, but it wasn't a bad pool. Yeah, it was really really hot, and when I say hot, I mean we're in the UK. To us hot is 25 degrees. We were hitting 37s and 38s. It's hot and humid. Sitting on the poolside in the nice hot weather trying to find some shade. There's a nice bar at the Kidani and they did very nice nachos.
Speaker 2:So we moved the sails nicely all the way up and it's probably going to be wet today, Yay. And a few days of rain. Yeah, doing a cruise is a bit.
Speaker 1:A bit different though, because if you're doing a split stay with a cruise, then you have to change, because there's that you're going to get from the hotel to the cruise and then unpack, do the cruise pack and then come back with a split stay with two different locations. So in our case case Riviera and Kidani there's this element in the middle where you don't really have to do it. You could have just stayed at Riviera.
Speaker 1:The Slitsay, I think, was a useful experience and it was quite nice being able to see another resort stay at another resort, but it was a bit of a faff. It wouldn't be something that I would recommend unless you have to do it. Well, if you want to see dross, Well, if you want to see dross, then you.
Speaker 2:Kidani.
Speaker 1:False felt. Yeah, and Kidani it's fine. The other big problem with Kidani is the distance. It's probably the furthest on-site resort hotel.
Speaker 2:I think it is the furthest.
Speaker 1:And it's 25 minutes to half an hour on the bus to get to any of the other parks.
Speaker 2:Basically it's the closest resort to Animal Kingdom, but it's the furthest resort from Magic Kingdom, Epcot and Hollywood Studio. So you do have to factor in that transport time and, yes, it has to be a bus.
Speaker 1:So, kidani, it's quiet and if you like animals, I think that's the main thing. If you like animals and you're into the whole animal thing, I think that's the main thing. If you like animals and you're into the whole animal thing, then Kidani and Jambo House are very much orientated towards that Jambo House, more so, possibly, if you've got kids, because it's a bit noisier.
Speaker 1:There's more kids activities going on. Both of them are built on like a semi-circular structure and they have this thing called the Savannah. The first thing I would say if you're not booking a savannah hotel room, don't bother, because you'll be looking over the car park with a palm tree in front of you. So in my opinion, savannah rooms are the ones to go for if you're doing savannah at jambo lodge. Central part of the savannah area has a thing they call the lookout, which has everyone from the hotel wandering in and looking out at the animals. The problem is they're looking out at the animals straight into your bedrooms.
Speaker 2:Is anyone from the hotels, anybody who visits them? It's anyone who visits them at all?
Speaker 1:And that was quite noisy. I mean, a couple of times we were sitting out on the balcony and it was nice just listening to the animals munching away, and a giraffe munching from 20 feet away does actually make quite a lot of noise.
Speaker 2:So Jamman Hills was nice, but it's a lot bigger than Vidani and it was a lot noisier, Even the first time we walked in. When we first got to the resort, it was like, yeah, this is definitely going to be loud.
Speaker 1:Yeah, so walked in when we first got to the resort. Yeah, this is definitely going to be loud. I'm actually glad you weren't injured. The one thing we did forget to mention is Kidani is DVC only, where Jumbo House has two floors of DVC and the rest is open to anyone paying rat rate. So you can only actually do Kidani Lodge if you're on the DVC contract or you're opening DVC Point or you're opening DVC points. Or you're renting DVC points.
Speaker 2:One good thing I did do, though, is I did do a mini bus between the two resorts, because, although it's the same resort at Malkinder, they were all about a 10-minute walk between the pair of resorts.
Speaker 1:We walked once and it was about 15 minutes because you could short it.
Speaker 2:Yeah, so they actually run a little mini bus shuttle between the two it they actually run a little minibus shuttle between the two, which is quite handy. It's also quite handy because you've only got one restaurant in Kidani and all the other restaurants are down in Jamboree.
Speaker 1:Yeah, are we going to talk about the restaurants?
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, let's talk about our food. Food, lots of it, lots of choice, lots of choice.
Speaker 1:Not as much choice in Kidani. I mean, you've got the quick service which was african orientated. Now I must admit, when I looked at the original menus and when we first looked at going to kadani, I'm much more of a conventional eater. I mean, I don't mind spicy food, but riviera always appeals to me because I just like the food. When we first looked at it was like okay, great, I'm gonna have to get used to eating olives and chickpeas. I don't mind chickpeas, but there was very african style orientated food on the menu I'll be honest, I didn't even look for the menu I did.
Speaker 1:I always look at the menus. Well, no I'm gonna eat I'm surprised no, I'd rather know what I'm gonna eat. And it wasn't too bad. I mean, they still had the staples like chicken tenders and chips. The quick serve was okay. Then we went to the two restaurants in Annal Kingdom Lodge in Jambo House, one of which was okay, which was interesting because the okay bit was this is very, very expensive and very, very posh, and the food was okay and that was.
Speaker 2:That was Gico.
Speaker 1:Gico, which is one of their signature restaurants, and we were told by some friends that you must have the venison.
Speaker 2:Oh, venison was nice.
Speaker 1:And I love venison and I like steak. So we both had the steak and the venison and we split it, but it wasn't outstanding. I was expecting it to be at the sort of level of Paolo. If you've eaten on cruise lines, paolo restaurant is right at the top of that level.
Speaker 2:It was nice. The food was nice, and it was nice having a semi-plush dinner, but, yeah, it just sort of lacked something. It was not a wow factor, whereas at Paolo, every dish that comes to your table is like wow, okay, this is one that've had a time.
Speaker 1:And then we went to Boma. Now, generally I've found Disney catering buffets have been reasonable. They've normally got a reasonable selection and covers everything from fish meat, all the usual things you'd expect with basic American fare.
Speaker 2:Little fish.
Speaker 1:Chicken or fish and various other things. I must admit, boma was outstanding. I was shocked because it's the first time I've done a buffet restaurant where literally everything appealed, if you throw out the idea of I'm not eating that because it sounds weird, or looks weird Literally. We decided that we were going to go from one end of the buffet to the other end of the buffet and have a little bit of everything, starting out with the sweet corn pudding, which sounds really weird and really odd, and it's gorgeous.
Speaker 2:That and the oxtail stew.
Speaker 1:Oh yes, oxtail stew Another South African classic, I'm told. I mean, we grew up having oxtail as kids oxtail soup and it used to be the really cheapy oxtail soup, the real cheapy stuff, where this stew was basically made of real oxtail by a chef and it was gorgeous and in fact, everything in boma was fantastic. That now puts boma as a restaurant for me where I would go back to it just to go to that restaurant. The other restaurant, the really expensive one and when I'm talking about really expensive, we're talking about for a steak, boma 100. I would go back to boma just to go for that restaurant. Love Boma.
Speaker 2:The only thing I'm a bit disappointed about is everybody goes on about the zebra domes and these are a dessert that you can only get in Annal Fiends and Lodge and everyone's like oh no, you've got to try the zebra domes, you've got to try the zebra domes. They're really nice. They're okay. I quite like them. They were nice but they weren't well. I'm sorry. It's another one that lost its well-fetched property.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I mean they were basically just a domey mallow thing with a little bit of alcohol in it. I quite liked it.
Speaker 2:I was. We quite liked.
Speaker 1:Animal Kingdom Lodge didn't we. Yeah, I mean I'm not going to sit here saying that I was disappointed. I think I would say don't book animal kingdom lodge again for a while, because I'm not an animal person. It wasn't massively special in that respect. Boma I would definitely go back for and boma I would travel there just to go to that restaurant so I'm a fan of boma animal kingdom lodge.
Speaker 1:It's fine. I mean, it's it's. We've now done three dvc resorts disney, my one, which is our home resort, is still Riviera, followed by Saratoga, followed by Animal Kingdom Lodge.
Speaker 2:And on the opposite, on Riviera Animal Kingdom, Saratoga.
Speaker 1:There wasn't any animals at Saratoga.
Speaker 2:So we stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge, we did a split stay and we also did a couple of other things on this trip that we haven't done before, including an after-hours event. I've been researching after-hours events on YouTube, looking at them, watching all different videos about oh, they're a bit fun. You get the park, it's a bit quieter, you get unlimited snacks. Those kinds of virtual queues become standby here, so we decided to do Epcot after-hours. However, the day we chose to do Epcot after hours, however, the day we chose to do Epcot hours happened to be the same day that the weather decided we were going to have a thunderstorm.
Speaker 1:And it was also the tail end of me having a cold, so I wasn't feeling great.
Speaker 2:So, unfortunately, Mr Disney wasn't at home, but we still went along. We got to the park about half past seven. It had been raining for about an hour and a half before we went and it stopped. We were like, ok, got to the park about half past seven. It'd been raining for about an hour and a half before we went and it stopped. So like okay, let's go. So we got to the park, got in and scanned down my feet balance, just started walking through to our dining reservation and, um, the rain stopped it, yeah, so we have poncho time there's, we rocked the disney poncho I still.
Speaker 1:I still got my legs a bit wet though, but yeah, it was, it was fine. It was quite entertaining Very, very wet feet. So yeah, I had waterproof shoes or things that dry out quickly or spare socks, or spare socks. But yeah, we did manage to get rather wet and went, then went and see the princesses at Norway.
Speaker 2:Pavilion, berkester's Hall, which was a very nice dinner.
Speaker 1:It was. I think I prefer the breakfast, though.
Speaker 2:And in order for that we headed out, and we headed out onto the go. Now we weren't sure if the fireworks were or weren't going to go ahead, because Disney have this policy that if there's lightning in the area, sometimes the night time spectaculars don't go ahead. But we were all in the lagoon wandering around, sort of just having a mosey and a stroll as as you do.
Speaker 2:And then the next thing we know, the firework, luminous symphony of us started. Now we saw this in february, facing out over world showcase. If you don't know epcot, you've got two areas. You've got the whole celebration area, which has got spated path and all the young pavilions, and then you've got World Showcase, which has got all the country pavilions. Now in February we actually sat on the celebration side looking out over World Showcase and we both thought it was a bit meh.
Speaker 1:It wasn't as good as what was harmonious For me, shows in. There has to be some emotional commitment there. I want to come out of a show whether it's a firework show, whether it's a stage show almost with tears in my eyes, because I've felt some connection with the music, with the acting and with the production and it's caught me in the smalls and back in February I was just like, oh, it's very pretty and the music's okay, but it didn't have that extra punch, that sort of caught you in the heart, and we sort of marked it down as being yeah, okay, they've done it, they've changed it and it's a bit naff. Let's hope they change it back.
Speaker 2:And originally we thought well, the following restaurant. We'll just carry on living around in Lagos and it's's like wait a minute, rich just stopped.
Speaker 1:We found a spot we were by the italian pavilion, looking out backwards across our show coast towards spaceship earth, and in my honest opinion, this was such a better view it was, and I think it was because we saw it on a much wider scale and you also saw the fact that they use the epcot ball at times as part of the whole display, which is interesting because you wouldn't see that from all of the places on the lake sort of that side. And yeah, it really it was the same show but it was like a completely different show. The music worked well with the display.
Speaker 2:Yeah, towards the end of it I was like something might happen. And there was the old flash of lightning going on in the distance as well, which made it even more interesting.
Speaker 1:Yeah, she's got a thing about lightning. It was fine, but yeah, it wasn't too bad. Actually I quite liked it.
Speaker 2:We carried on wandering around to the UK pavilion, found a pelage whilst everybody exited from the park, and then, after our party started, a couple of started. We had the ride we wanted to do in that car.
Speaker 1:We had done it Spaceship Earth, because they're busy. We always do Spaceship, I know, but I like Spaceship Earth, I know you like.
Speaker 2:Spaceship. So we did the American version of Remy's Ratatouille, which I actually found was better than the French version.
Speaker 1:I think it was.
Speaker 2:It's quite newer than the French version. It just seemed to be slightly better. And then I got to ride the, the holy grail one for me, which was guardians of the galaxy cosmic.
Speaker 1:Yeah, this is the okay, bear in mind. I'm not feeling great and I've just had a big meal, so I was like, no, I'm not gonna. I'm not gonna write guardians. I'm not a massive lover of roller coasters, so I thought okay I'll put myself down on the bench and she'll be 20 minutes or so.
Speaker 1:53 minutes later she comes back absolutely buzzing yeah, so the fact that it was after hours probably meant that I didn't have to wait two hours for her, but I did have to wait nearly an hour for her to get on and go around and I think she liked it it's one of those rides everyone kept saying, oh, you've got to do it, you've got to do it, you've got to do it.
Speaker 2:I've never had the opportunity to go on it, although we have had the opportunity, but I'm not one of these that gets up at half past six and wanted to get the third truck to you. So I do that when disney sleep, because I do get tired in disney and it was just like wow, actually getting on it. Without doing too many spoilers, it's one of those coasters that, yeah, I would go battle. It's one of those coasters. I know that. This one. Certainly it's been incredible.
Speaker 1:It doesn't really appeal. I'd have to have about eight Sturger on and and anyone that's been on Cosmic Rewind.
Speaker 2:I got set. We all know how rare that one is. This garden is a galaxy. And then we're walking back towards Connections, which is a shop in Chippendale having a disco. Why are chicknugs? I like chicknugs.
Speaker 1:They're squirrels.
Speaker 2:If you want to annoy Chippendale.
Speaker 1:Just call them squirrels and wait to see what happens. It's quite entertaining.
Speaker 2:And then we decided to head to. The resort happens. It's quite entertaining. And then we decided to head to the resort.
Speaker 1:Um, after a bit of a delip with live, we finally got back to the resort eventually, after hours walked.
Speaker 2:It worth the money. Yeah, did I have any mickey bar?
Speaker 1:no, I forgot, but I did have a couple of drinks. How do you forget mickey?
Speaker 2:bar all the time. It's like the remember me mickey bars.
Speaker 1:No I think it was possibly the fact we had a big meal, so I didn't really. But yeah, you get Mickey Bars and popcorn and drink for free as part of the price, which wasn't too bad.
Speaker 2:Oh, the other thing that was quite nice about the after hours is they actually had a Mickey Mouse out by Walt's statue that they've just put into the park, so it's quite a nice picture. Well, that's Mickey and Walt. That was like a picture. I've always wanted something like that. I've seen somebody else had it from the after hours. In fact it's like, yeah, if they're doing it, I want that picture. Famous, famous, yes. Right so that's after hours, so what else did we do?
Speaker 1:We went to 1900 in Grand Floridian, which sounds really, really posh and it's not bad. I mean Grand Floridian. I can see why people really go for the Grand Floridian. It's a bit of a mouthful Grand Floridian.
Speaker 2:The Grand Floridian.
Speaker 1:DVC Resort.
Speaker 2:It's not just DVC, it's in Walsall.
Speaker 1:It's people with money.
Speaker 2:Posh people.
Speaker 1:Posh people. We did a buffet meal there and yep the strawberry. What was it? Strawberry soup.
Speaker 2:Strawberry soup.
Speaker 1:Strawberry soup oh, where have you been? All my life I could just have that's it. Strawberry soup Strawberry soup is the thing to have.
Speaker 2:We liked the mango soup on the cruise yeah mango soup on the cruise was pretty good.
Speaker 1:Strawberry soup is slightly better.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah, it was nice, and there were a few princesses prancing around 1900 totally worth doing.
Speaker 1:And then we just sort of had a bit of a chin out resort that day didn't we?
Speaker 2:that's because we were just dreaming about the strawberry and also because we were going somewhere else the next day. Where do we go? Where?
Speaker 1:do we go? The next day? We went to somewhere that I've been wanting to go for the last 50 years and we went to Kennedy. So we went to the Space Center. They didn't have any strawberry soup there, but they did have some weird foodstuffs Space dots, space dots but yeah, we called up Gear Fusion, our favorite chauffeur-to-taxi driver service, kennedy is about an hour-ish drive away from Orlando to get out there.
Speaker 1:There is a bus trip that I've seen, but we didn't do that because we didn't want to have to troop all the way out to Boardwalk to go on it. So we picked Gear Fusion. They picked us up at eight. We were there about 20 past nine and it actually opens at nine, so we got there quite early. Kennedy is fantastic. It's laid out really well. It's laid out really well. It's laid out in stages so you can go and look at space shuttle bits, you can look at the pre-history stuff, and I think we might have to do at some point an entire video just on kennedy, because there's so much to do. We tried to scrape it all into a day. We didn't do the extended bus tour because there are two bus tours. We couldn't get onto the extended bus tour because you needed a us phone number.
Speaker 1:It's wow and you get to go and touch a moon rock I touched the shuttle exhibit where you go through pre-show and the pre-show to the main section is just jaw-dropping.
Speaker 2:The way they introduce the shuttle is just like wow having growing up watching the shuttle fly, to actually see the shuttle, that really was a moment yeah it was a bit of an emotional moment.
Speaker 1:Definitely was a moment there's a memorial for columbia, there's a memorial for challenger. It's really, really patriotic, it's really done well and it's one of those shows that I come out thinking I want to be an American. It's done that well. But if you're into any form of space or technology, it is a must to do at some point in time. It is going to take you more than a day to go around and do properly. There was at least one hall that we didn't see and we didn't do the extended bus tour. So I think we'll go back at some point and sort of catch up.
Speaker 2:And there was wonderful. We only did it briefly but even for me I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy Kennedy and I got back into the Gear Fusion to go back to the resort and I was just like, wow, that was so good.
Speaker 1:Yeah, it was. It really was good. It was Not just good, it was a highlight, I think. For me that was probably the best part of the trip was going to see kenny and the australian party was too hard for me yeah but yeah, the only thing that would have made tennessee that little bit better is if we've managed to catch the launch.
Speaker 2:That would have made it sort of even more of a wow and there was a launch scheduled.
Speaker 1:they actually have a number of launches now. It's not where, like the old system where you used to wait for a shuttle Because they've got SpaceX, they've got Blue Origin, they've got other stuff going on. There's regular launches and whilst we were there, there was one just before we got there and I think there was one a couple of days after. So, yeah, a catchy launch would have been great, but Kennedy, fantastic visit.
Speaker 1:I think, we will have to go back at some point. We will go back at some point. I wouldn't do it every trip because it takes an entire day out.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it was nice actually having a day, because we'd also felt to do have a resort the other day before because we'd rested. I think we were ready to go and do something. And then we got back from Kennedy and then we headed back into the box and that's the part before Happily Ever After was starting. We did Happily Ever After in full in February when it was out there and we were walking out to the bus and I was singing along to Happily Ever After for the music. But one thing I do like that Disney do is while you're waiting for the buses back to the resort, they play the music for Happily Ever After around the bus stops as well, so everyone was singing. It was quite weird to have the bus stops as well, so everyone was singing and you could see the fireworks.
Speaker 2:It was quite weird to have the bus stop from there to Sydney. It really really was lovely. It was like a really nice ending to what had been a really good day.
Speaker 1:Yeah, any words Negatives Negative.
Speaker 2:Heat.
Speaker 1:Heat, it was hot.
Speaker 2:It was so hot to the point, I had Mark heat stroke at one point.
Speaker 1:Yeah, she had a little bit of heat stroke.
Speaker 2:We weren't expecting it to be as hot. Having spoken to Todd from Gear Fusion, who was our driver for Kennedy. He was saying that it's actually hotter than it normally is this time of year.
Speaker 1:I think it was four to five degrees hotter than they normally have.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:And it wasn't just one day, it was every day. So it was hot, but like everything, you just have to adapt. So it's floppy hats, sunglasses, sun cream, drink lots of water. You just go with cooling towels.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I just go with cooling towels. I used to look at cooling towels and go what's cooling towels? No, who needs it? And then the day I had a heat stroke, I need to go and buy one of those now.
Speaker 1:And she did, and they're reusable. So yeah, cooling towels. So I think that was the main negative.
Speaker 2:But in all it was a really good trip, and then we flew home. It was a very interesting life, wasn't it?
Speaker 1:There were thunderstorms on the way out. We were told by the pilot on the way back that they'd actually closed the airport about 20 minutes after we took off, so that was a good thing. Anyway, I think people are getting bored now they're probably bored of hearing about our holiday now.
Speaker 2:But no, it was good it but no, it was good, it was fun. This is our second trip using our dvc points.
